My wife gave me a copy of Blast Off for X-mas, a book on space toys from the 1920s to the 1960s. Some of the stuff is similar to that in the old Starlog magazine special, but I was really taken with this War of the Worlds diorama from 1925 by Henri Mignot.

It seems there was only one made, its 37 inches wide and built into a case. The Mignot company seemed to specialise in toy soldiers.

Nice diorama. I'm a big fan of H. G. Wells and War of the Worlds is a great book. When they made movies from it, they set them in the present day of whenever the movies were made. One of things I love about the book, which is set in Wells' present day of course, is that it's Victorians with horses and carts against the superior technology of the Martians, ie they don't have a hope in hell. This diorama is more 1920s in look, but it still has a great retro feel, and I really dig all the tentacles.
